Shinjuku ( (しん) 宿 (じゅく) Shinjuku?) is a special ward in Tokyo, Japan. It is a key location in the Jujutsu Kaisen series and serves as the main setting of the Shinjuku Showdown Arc.

Description

Shinjuku is a city-level ward that serves as a major commercial and administrative district in Tokyo. According to Suguru Geto, Shinjuku is considered "the crucible of curses".[1]

History

Gojo's Past Arc

When Suguru Geto was on the run after murdering the entire population of a village, he met Shoko Ieiri in Shinjuku. The latter then called Satoru Gojo who arrived to confront Suguru before he left for good.[2]

Cursed Child Arc

Gojo and Yaga as curses invade Shinjuku (Anime)

Gojo and Yaga during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons.

On December 24, 2017, the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons took place in Shinjuku and Kyoto. A thousand curses were released in Shinjuku by Suguru Geto. To face the curse user's forces, many jujutsu sorcerers, including Satoru and Masamichi Yaga, assembled to battle them.[3] Gojo confronted Miguel, one of Suguru's commanders, in a fight that raged throughout the ward.[4][5]

Shinjuku Showdown Arc

Sukuna and Gojo's clash destroys a building

Large portions of Shinjuku decimated by the fight with Sukuna.

Following the Shibuya Incident on October 31st, 2018, all twenty-three wards of Tokyo were compromised.[6] Shinjuku was left desolate, off-limits to the public, and home to only cursed spirits. With no bystanders around, Makyo Shinjuku was the ideal location for a clash between the most destructive sorcerers in history, becoming the battlefield for the jujutsu sorcerers' raid on Sukuna. Great portions of the city were decimated by powerful acts of jujutsu sorcery, including two Hollow Purple techniques that carved through Shinjuku.[7][8] As the raid continued, Shinjuku was further ravaged by the battle. Uraume's ice froze over a section of the city during their fight with Hakari[9] and Sukuna unleashed his domain as well as his Divine Flame, annihilating a far more massive area.[10]
