Ryomen Sukuna's Fingers (
History

Sukuna's finger wrapped in talisman.
Over a thousand years ago, Sukuna accepted Kenjaku's offer to participate in the Culling Game. As part of the contract, Kenjaku divided Sukuna's soul into his twenty fingers and turned them into cursed objects, allowing Sukuna to live on after his death.[1][2] These fingers would go on to traverse the ages for a millennium. Due to their immense cursed energy, these fingers were placed in areas susceptible to receiving cursed energy in order to ward off curses.[3] Six of these fingers would eventually come into Tokyo Jujutsu High's possession, who ranked them as special grade and stored them within their cursed warehouse due to being unable to destroy them.[4]
Over time, the talisman used to seal these fingers would weaken as they grew in strength, causing them to attract curses to feed on them instead.[5][6] While the seal normally cannot be removed by non-sorcerers, the cursed objects' power and the aging talisman would eventually allow them.[7]
When Yuji Itadori was born, one of Sukuna's fingers was sealed inside him by Kenjaku, who possessed the body of his mother, Kaori Itadori. This strengthened Yuji so he could serve as Sukuna's vessel, and designated him as a player in the Culling Game.[8]
Fearsome Womb Arc

Yuji consumes one of Sukuna's fingers.
In June 2018, one of Sukuna's fingers located inside Sugisawa Third Municipal High School's thermometer shed was discovered and retrieved by the school's Occult Research Club,[9][10] who unknowingly removed the talisman that sealed it.[11] The immense cursed energy within the finger attracted numerous curses, endangering the lives of club members Setsuko Sasaki and Takeshi Iguchi as the curses attempted to swallow them and the finger.[12]

Sukuna incarnates through Yuji.
After engaging in a losing battle against the curses, Yuji consumed the finger in a desperate attempt to save his club mates and Megumi Fushiguro, unaware of the dangers of doing so. While this action would usually cause death to the consumer, Yuji managed to incarnate Sukuna instead, allowing the dormant King of Curses to possess his body and destroy the curse in pursuit. Sukuna would soon discover, however, that his new vessel can completely suppress him, preventing him from freely controlling his body.[13]
After Yuji accepted Satoru Gojo's assignment to eliminate Sukuna by dying after consuming all of his fingers, Gojo gave him a second finger to ingest. Yuji safely ate this finger as well, with Sukuna unable to assert control despite regaining a tenth of his power, confirming that the young man had the phenomenal ability to completely control Sukuna.[14]

Sukuna takes Yuji hostage.
Due to Sukuna's reincarnation in the modern era, many of his fingers which were already consumed by cursed spirits awakened and released their cursed energy, transforming the curses that ingested them into powerful special grade cursed spirits known as Finger Bearers.[15] One of these curses was located in building 2 of the Eishu Juvenile Detention Center in West Tokyo City, having transformed into a cursed womb in order to undergo metamorphosis.[16]
The first-years were assigned the mission of exorcising the curse, but were completely outmatched by the special grade.[17][18] In an act of desperation, Yuji gave control of his body to Sukuna, who effortlessly destroyed the Finger Bearer and retrieved his finger from it.[19][20] Upon realizing that Yuji was temporarily unable to regain control, Sukuna took advantage of the opportunity to confront Megumi in an attempt to kill him. Before their battle, he ripped out Yuji's heart in order to prevent him from switching back and ate his third finger.[21]
Vs. Mahito Arc

Nagi finds Sukuna's finger.
A fourth finger, specifically the left extra-arm pinky finger, was intentionally planted within Junpei Yoshino's home.[22][23] The cursed object was discovered by Nagi Yoshino, Junpei's mother, causing her to be killed by the cursed spirit drawn to it.[24] Using her death and the finger, Mahito misled Junpei into believing that Shota Ito planted the cursed object to do him harm.[25] After the incident at Satozakura High School, the finger was discovered and recovered by Jujutsu High.[23]
Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc

Mahito steals the fingers.
The six fingers in Jujutsu High's possession would later be taken by Mahito during the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event when the jujutsu sorcerers were distracted by Hanami's presence at the event.[26] These fingers were kept by his group in preparation for the Shibuya Incident. The cursed spirits eventually collected four more, totaling ten fingers.
Death Painting Arc

Megumi acquires another one of Sukuna's fingers.
A fifth finger was later discovered to have also transformed a cursed spirit into a Finger Bearer. This curse was located under Yasohachi Bridge, and its increased strength allowed it to kill the students who once bungee-jumped near its lair and were marked by it years ago.[27] The Finger Bearer was exorcised by Megumi after the first-years were sent to investigate the curse,[28] and the finger was accidentally eaten by Yuji after Sukuna opened a mouth on his hand.[29]
Shibuya Incident Arc

The ten fingers in Jogo's collection.

Nanako feeds Yuji a finger.
During the Shibuya Incident, an unconscious Yuji was found by Mimiko Hasaba and Nanako Hasaba, who fed him one of Sukuna's fingers in hopes of bringing out the King of Curses to exact revenge on Kenjaku, who had taken over Suguru Geto's body. They were interrupted by Jogo, who sensed the presence of the finger.[30]
After seemingly killing the two girls, Jogo then revealed the ten fingers in his possession and fed them all to Yuji, causing him to consume sixteen fingers total.[31][32] Due to consuming eleven fingers at once, Yuji was unable to suppress Sukuna and temporarily lost control of his body.[33] Nanako and Mimiko, having survived Jogo's attack, knew of the location of another one of Sukuna's fingers and attempted to use it to bargain with the King of Curses when he asked for the wishes of those who awakened him, displeasing him and leading to their deaths.[34]
Shinjuku Showdown Arc

Sukuna eats three of his fingers.
Uraume, Sukuna's loyal servant from a thousand years ago, would eventually collect three of his fingers. As the day for his showdown with Satoru Gojo approached, Sukuna, having newly incarnated into Megumi's body, consumed these fingers to regain his full strength. With only one finger's whereabouts unknown, Sukuna surmised that Gojo hid the last finger away in order to stall Yuji's execution.[35]
During his fight with Sukuna, Yuta Okkotsu hinted that the last missing finger was consumed by Rika, allowing him to copy Sukuna's Shrine and store the cursed technique as part of his arsenal.[36] Using the copied technique, Yuta was able to activate Cleave on Sukuna using the katana containing the technique, slashing the ancient curse user's face.[37]
However, Yuta's words were later shown to be a ruse to deceive Sukuna, as Rika had actually consumed one of Yuji's fingers to obtain Shrine, with Sukuna's last finger being in possession of the jujutsu sorcerers. Nobara Kugisaki used Resonance on this last finger to critically wound Sukuna before he could activate his domain expansion against Yuji.[38] This last finger was eventually placed inside another thermometer shed, unsealed from its box and acting as a ward against curses.[39]
Description

A Sukuna's finger being undamaged by several talisman.
Ryomen Sukuna's fingers are severed mummified fingers that originally belonged to Sukuna. There are a total of twenty of them, each containing the soul and fragmented power of Sukuna even after a thousand years. Each of the fingers possesses cursed energy equivalent to a special grade cursed spirit.[40]
The fingers are indestructible and can only be sealed. However, even after being sealed, the fingers remain an incredible threat and continue to attract curses, growing stronger day by day.[41][42] The presence of the cursed objects can vary from finger to finger, with some possessing immense auras, some others remaining hidden, and some having already been consumed by cursed spirits, which makes locating them extremely difficult.[43][44] If Sukuna wished to regain his power by gathering his other fingers,[45] his vessel could act as a radar for these cursed objects, directing them to the whereabouts of the fingers.[46]

Yuji's rare ability to imprison the King of Curses.
Sukuna's fingers cannot be devoured by just anyone since they are equivalent to lethal poison for a human when ingested.[47] Additionally, cursed spirits cannot become vessels for Sukuna.[48] As a result, those capable of serving as Sukuna's vessel are rare and hard to come by, though Sukuna can choose his vessel.[49] Yuji's ability to become a cage (

However, while Yuji will not lose control of his body even after ingesting all twenty of Sukuna's fingers, that is only if he swallows the fingers at a moderate rate, such as a finger a day for twenty days. If he swallows ten fingers at once, his body will not be able to adapt quickly enough and Sukuna will temporarily take over.[51]

A Finger Bearer warping its birthplace.
As previously mentioned, cursed spirits who had ingested a finger of Sukuna saw their powers evolve when Yuji ingested one of the fingers and incarnated him. The cursed objects, until then dormant, were awakened as a result of resonance, transforming the curses that consumed them into Finger Bearers.[52] These cursed spirits notably share a similar appearance, resembling humanoids with pale white skin, four eyes, holes in their chests that hold the finger they ingested, and wearing loincloths. When they appear, they expand their innate domain in their birthplace without using a cursed technique, warping the environment akin to an incomplete domain expansion.[53][54]
These curses that carry the curse of Sukuna are extremely powerful and are immediately ranked as special grade after their appearance. So far, they have proven to be quite skilled in combat with a penchant for cruelty, finding pleasure in toying with the lives of their opponents, much like Sukuna himself. Although they are very strong, these cursed spirits tend to linger at their point of origin like ordinary curses and attack any individual who enters their living space.
Trivia
- According to the official guidebook:
- Sukuna's fingers have a taste similar to soap since they are covered in grave wax.[48]
- If a finger is sealed or eaten by a cursed spirit, then there is almost no information that can be gathered by Sukuna. He can only sense that they are close or not. If a finger is not sealed, he has a general sense of its surroundings. That's why he complimented Megumi's progress at the Yasohachi Bridge after the latter used his Domain Expansion.[48]
- The fingers were sealed using the secret Buddhist sutra "Mara Destruction Method" (
摧 魔 怨 敵 法 Saima Onteki-hō?), also known as the "Dharmachakra Method" (転 法 輪 法 Tenporin-hō?).[55]
