Dura Val Bobbidi Mechika, Part 1 (ドゥーラ・ヴァル・ボビディ・メチカ (
Summary
Cross recounts his childhood on Simuria and his encounter with his mentor and father figure.
Plot Details
Cross and Maru's village was destroyed by their government, with their parents dying in resistance, being crushed to death by their collapsing home. As their father died, he held an ordinary rock as if it were precious, a final act that confused Cross. Later, the twins were captured and jailed for stealing. A Simurian named Dura, urged by an elder, reluctantly agreed to look after them. When the boys met Dura, they attacked him but were easily defeated, and their spirit amused him enough to employ them in building a canal.
At the worksite, Dura assigned them to fill cages with unearthed rocks, and warned them to not move the rocks above the pit. The boys obeyed eagerly, impressed by Dura's strength. When Maru asked about the canal, Dura explained its purpose: improving shipping between Deskunte and Shaama. Cross angrily questioned why Rumelians should build something benefiting the Deskuntes, who had driven them from their homeland and killed their parents. Dura answered that the canal had long been planned but was halted by attacks from Kalyans, sacred beasts that only targeted Simurians from other tribes, making Rumelians the only ones able to safely construct it.
Cross found Dura's answer evasive, reminding him that it was the Deskuntes who had forced Rumelians into the barren wasteland in the first place. Dura clarified that the canal would benefit the Rumelians as well, serving as a gesture of peaceful coexistence to the Deskuntes and creating a connection between the two tribes. He also planned to divert water from the nearby Rumel River into the canal, which would make the land more fertile and provide cleaner water for Rumelian camps and villages. Even with this explanation, Cross still could not understand Dura's desire to seek peace with those who had wronged them.
In the following days, Cross stopped coming to work. Eventually, Dura and Maru found the cages destroyed and rocks piled into the canal. Cross stood nearby, observing the damage, but Dura realized the sabotage came from Rumelians opposed to his ideals. Unfazed, Dura continued working. Meanwhile, the Rumelians who sabotaged the project discussed further plans when Cross suddenly entered their tent and attacked their leader, Osuki. Later, Maru and Dura found a bruised Cross digging out the canal, having resolved to help Dura.
The trio continued working together. One day, Jabaloma approached Dura to inform him that the council of elders had approved the project, allowing the entire village to assist. As villagers gathered, Cross saw Osuki and his group join in. Remembering Dura's words, Cross approached them to apologize for striking them and to thank them for cooperating, and they responded in kind. At this moment, Cross finally understood that peaceful coexistence was possible with mutual goodwill and time.
After ten years of labor, the canal was finally completed. The Rumelians watched as a Deskunte ship sailed through it. Later, Dura announced that the Deskuntes had requested a port to be built halfway along the canal so their ships could dock and rest. Though the villagers were hesitant at first, Dura quickly convinced them by noting that the Deskuntes would pay for the port and that it would help resume trade. The Rumelians spent the rest of the day planning and celebrating, genuinely believing that things were changing for the better.
Then one day, the daughter of the Deskunte chieftain was mauled to death by a Kalyan.
