Special Grade Incident (
Summary
Sixty-eight years after Ryomen Sukuna's defeat, in 2086, the Simurians, an alien race, arrive at Earth with about fifty thousand of their people aboard a spaceship. Possessing powers akin to jujutsu sorcery, they dispatch an agent named Marulu Val Vol Yelvori to establish contact with Japan's jujutsu society. Working alongside Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu, the grandchildren of Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin, Maru investigates the abductions of missing citizens, who are being used as energy sources.
Plot Details
2086, the mothership Naunax carrying nearly 50,000 extraterrestrial beings known as Simurians appears 30,000 meters above Nevada, United States, seeking refuge on Earth. Aboard the vessel, a horned Simurian asks a younger one why they are conducting diplomacy with Japan instead of the United States, the strongest nation on Earth. The young Simurian explains that the U.S. has delegated all diplomatic authority regarding the Simurians to Japan. Opening his third eye, he reveals that Japan has jujutsu sorcerers, humans with powers similar to the Simurians.
2076, a six-year-old Yuka Okkotsu spent time with her grandfather, Yuta Okkotsu, who decided to gift her his treasured ring. Yuka was initially reluctant, as the ring was his treasure. Yuka was hesitant to accept it, but Yuta explained that he worried about her recklessness and that the ring would protect her until she became a jujutsu sorcerer. Overjoyed, Yuka vowed to work hard and fulfill that destiny. Four years later, Yuta passed away. At his funeral, Yuka reaffirmed her promise. Afterward, however, her mother ordered her to give the ring to her brother, Tsurugi Okkotsu, claiming it was a cursed object registered under the Gojo Clan and that only Tsurugi was worthy of it. When Yuka later confronted her brother and demanded it back, Tsurugi said it wasn't his choice. Enraged, Yuka attacked him but was easily defeated. Remembering her mother's words, she resolved to train and grow stronger, determined to one day reclaim the ring.
In a talisman-covered warehouse, a man plays a retro shooting game with a young boy. The boy complains about his parents limiting his screen time and envies his friends who can play longer and buy DLC content. As his character dies in-game, the man wonders aloud if the game's content is appropriate for his age. The boy dismisses his concern, saying it's normal to die in a game. Ominously, the man asks if he would feel the same if it happened in real life.
In Kyoto, Usami briefs the now 17-year-old Tsurugi and 16-year-old Yuka on recent cases of Japanese citizens being abducted and used as energy sources. He assigns them and a third companion to investigate the disappearances of children in Kyoto, which the police suspect are the work of jujutsu sorcerers. When Yuka asks who their third partner is, a young man steps forward and introduces himself as Marulu Val Vol Yelvori, or Maru, the inspector for the mission. Yuka finds it unusual for a foreigner to be a jujutsu sorcerer, and she explains to him that cursed energy is unique to the Japanese people, with very few exceptions. Maru speculates that Japanese citizens are being abducted specifically for their cursed energy, which Usami confirms, adding that they are sold at high prices in the human trafficking market.
Tsurugi, however, dismisses Maru's ignorance as a liability and refuses to work with him. Yuka counters that the mission is investigative, not combative, so his presence shouldn't matter. Curious about the term, Maru presses them for the definition of "curse users" while the siblings argue. Frustrated, the two snap at him, explaining that curse users are evil sorcerers, and warn him to stay quiet or be left behind. Usami then clarifies that Maru is a representative of the state party, tasked with inspecting the capabilities of Japanese sorcerers as part of the Security Treaty. Yuka recalls hearing about routine inspections, while Maru confirms his role, secretly intending to judge whether human sorcerers are truly worthy of coexisting with the Simurians.
After Usami leaves, Maru clarifies that he will neither assist nor interfere with the mission, as ordered by the higher-ups. Immediately, Yuka and Tsurugi dash off in separate directions, leaving him behind. Maru is left alone for a while until Yuka eventually returns for him. Though initially annoyed at being abandoned, his frustration is cut short when his stomach growls with hunger. Later, Yuka buys him takoyaki, which Maru devours while crying tears of joy, even as he exclaims how hot it is. Yuka is baffled by his reaction, since takoyaki is a common food in the Kansai region. As they talk, Maru deduces that Yuka and Tsurugi are siblings, pointing out their similarities. Yuka denies it, still bitter about Tsurugi taking Yuta's ring after their mother declared him the better of the two. When Maru asks if Tsurugi is actually stronger, Yuka refutes the idea again, insisting they are roughly equal in strength. She does admit that Tsurugi is a hard worker, but believes it's just an act to justify keeping the ring. Hearing this, Maru offers to help Yuka complete the mission, arguing that their success would prove she is better than Tsurugi. Yuka agrees with the plan but hesitates, reminding him that he claimed he couldn't offer assistance. Maru counters that they can get away with it as long as he doesn't use cursed energy. With that, the two set out together, beginning their investigation on the streets of Kyoto without Tsurugi.
Some time later, Maru collapses onto the ground, exhausted from failing to find a single lead. Yuka remarks that she expected as much from an amateur, having already noticed something unusual herself. Writing on the holographic screen projected from her wrist device, she directs Maru's attention to the road they are on and asks which direction he would like to take. After they walk down a few paths, Yuka reveals that she has recorded the routes he chose, seemingly predicting his choices with perfect accuracy. Yuka explains that the road they traveled was under the influence of a physical gaze-manipulation curse, designed to subtly guide wanderers and children toward a specific path. She speculates that a barrier technique is set to activate and capture anyone who follows the path in the prescribed order, something Maru realizes could be used to quietly abduct children. Impressed, Maru praises Yuka's insight, which she brushes off, though not without a smug expression. Suddenly, Tsurugi appears behind them, having also detected the barrier and its trigger. After stating that he needs to retrieve a tool, he walks away, leaving Maru and Yuka alone. Maru then apologizes for not being of much help and admits he has a younger twin brother with whom he doesn't get along, largely because his brother is irritated by his clumsiness. He expresses his hope that the Okkotsu siblings will reconcile instead of ending up like him and his brother. Yuka, however, dismisses his concern, insisting that he is projecting his own idea of an ideal sibling relationship onto her and Tsurugi. She reaffirms that she doesn't care about him, as long as she can reclaim her ring.
Tsurugi later returns after finishing the report. The trio locate the beginning of the path and begin sealing it, believing this would prevent the conditions of the barrier technique from being fulfilled. Just as they finish taping off the entrance, a young boy suddenly runs past them into the alleyway. Before the sorcerers can react, a massive pair of hands emerges from the darkness, seizing the boy and teleporting him away. Deducing that the curse user had integrated spatial transference into the barrier technique, Tsurugi prepares to pursue the child while ordering Yuka and Maru to report back to Usami. When Yuka insists on accompanying him, Tsurugi refused, declaring that he wants to prove he is stronger than her. Suddenly, the hands reappear behind him and teleport him away, leaving only his katana behind. Confused as to why the barrier had only taken Tsurugi, Maru presses Yuka for an explanation. She realizes that the technique was designed to repel sorcerers with high levels of cursed energy to keep them from entering, hence why it took Tsurugi but not his cursed tool. Maru remains puzzled, pointing out that Tsurugi is a sorcerer. Yuka clarifies that her brother is a special case: he can't use cursed energy to fight and relies entirely on cursed tools to fight.
Seemingly unconcerned, Yuka decides to follow Tsurugi's last orders and report to Usami. Maru, however, offers to help her find Tsurugi, explaining that he has a plan. Yuka dismisses him, claiming Tsurugi deserved whatever happened to him. When Maru suggested asking Usami or nearby sorcerers for help, Yuka flatly rejects the idea. Frustrated, Maru argues that she would regret not reconciling with her brother if Tsurugi died, insisting that Tsurugi might one day have a change of heart, but only if he lived long enough. He implores Yuka to trust her brother and not curse him despite their feud. Yuka accuses Maru of projecting his ideals onto her, which Maru admits, clarifying that only he will be hurt or humiliated if she fails to meet them. Nonetheless, he begs her not to give up on her brother, just as he hasn’t given up on his own. Moved by his words, Yuka reluctantly agrees to search for Tsurugi, though she makes it clear she intends to punch him rather than save him. Overjoyed, Maru eagerly begins the rescue operation.
Elsewhere, in a warehouse covered with talismans, a restrained Tsurugi sits before the perpetrator as the man explains how Kyoto's grid-like infrastructure makes it perfectly compatible with his cursed technique. Tsurugi calls the curse user an idiot for committing crimes so close to Kyoto Jujutsu High, but the man turns the insult back on him, pointing out that Tsurugi is the fool who had activated the barrier technique and is now bound before him. The man then reveals his intention to quit the trafficking industry for reasons only a jujutsu sorcerer would understand. When Tsurugi responds in confusion, the curse user drops a shocking revelation: aliens have arrived. Tsurugi dismisses the claim outright, prompting the man to insist he was telling the truth, citing that the Jujutsu Inspector General had officially classified the extraterrestrial invasion as a special grade incident, placing it on par with Sukuna's attack 68 years ago. Tsurugi is stunned, recalling the sheer devastation of Sukuna's assault on Shinjuku, which had reduced the city to the Inhuman Makyo.
The curse user continues, explaining that ever since the enactment of the Kyoto Paranormal Security Treaty, diplomacy with the aliens has been left solely to Japan. However, he believes that the cultural divide between people of different planets will inevitably lead to tension, and eventually war once the aliens invade. That conflict, he argues, will expose the reality that Japan no longer has sorcerers on par with those who ended the Culling Game 68 years ago, the very event that had prompted the treaty in the first place. Once the world discovers how weak sorcerers have become, the dark industry of harvesting Japanese citizens' cursed energy as a power source will collapse, destroying their value on the human trafficking market. For that reason, the curse user plans to abandon the trade before the collapse, but not before selling Tsurugi for one final profit.
Realizing that the curse user is sparing his life because he is considered a commodity, Tsurugi jokingly asks if he will be sold together with the boy from earlier as a set. In response, the man lifts the overhead door behind him, revealing several children sealed inside airtight plastic containers, and that the boy has already been packaged and sold. The curse user explains that he intends to auction off Tsurugi, since he is a sorcerer despite his low cursed energy. He then confesses his hatred for children, calling them dirty, unimaginative, and annoying. Tsurugi insults him for projecting his own failures, mocking him as a pathetic adult too useless to earn money from honest work. Enraged, the man beats Tsurugi with vicious kicks, gleefully proclaiming that no one will ever find him in such a secluded location.
Suddenly, the warehouse door is blasted off its hinges and crashes into the curse user, knocking him away. Yuka and Maru arrive, coming to Tsurugi's rescue. They had been able to locate him thanks to Maru's cursed technique, which brings a person into harmony with the world. By using it on Yuka, the technique identified Tsurugi as her equal and located him, guiding them straight to him. After freeing Tsurugi from his restraints, Maru prepares to demand the return of the children, when Yuka suddenly challenges Tsurugi to a fight, to both his and Maru's shock. The siblings clash in hand-to-hand combat, with Tsurugi ultimately defeating Yuka after a few exchanges. Tearfully, Yuka admits that Tsurugi is strong, finally acknowledging the effort he has put in. Wiping her eyes, she abruptly shifts her attention to the curse user, demanding his surrender, leaving Tsurugi once again utterly confused.
Clapping her hands together, Yuka activates Savage Jaw Strike, enveloping her hands in jagged cursed energy that lengthens and sharpens her fingernails. She lunges at the curse user and slashes, leaving three deep cuts across his arm. Analyzing the technique, the man deduces it to be a martial arts strike imbued with special properties. Touching one of the talismans in the warehouse, he teleports behind Yuka and swings a hammer at her. Yuka quickly realizes he is using the same barrier technique from his kidnappings to teleport around the room. Irritated, Tsurugi calls for Maru to hand him his katana. As he draws it, a sharp metallic scraping sound echoes, immediately alerting the curse user. Tsurugi's cursed tool, Honoyagi, infuses its blade with sparks generated from its scabbard and guard. With a single motion, Tsurugi unleashes Batto Sword Drawing, releasing a wave of fire from his flaming katana that burns away the talismans in the room. Taking advantage of the distraction, Yuka closes in and lands a finishing Biting Twist, ending the fight. With the battle concluded, Maru rushes to check on the children and confirms that they are still alive. Relieved, Tsurugi commends Yuka for growing stronger, then promises to work harder so that he can one day return her ring.
At seven years old, Tsurugi Okkotsu spent time with his grandmother, Maki Zenin. Maki remarked that Tsurugi resembled her: both capable of becoming stronger through loss. However, she warned him that such strength was double-edged. Later, after overhearing Yuta give his ring to Yuka, Tsurugi told Maki that he wished to have one as well. She explained that the ring was a protective charm, and that Tsurugi didn't need one since he was already strong, a reassurance that delighted him. Four years later, after Yuta's ring was forcibly taken from Yuka, their mother gave it to Tsurugi. Though he protested that he didn't need it, she coldly replied that it was a decision made by the Gojo Clan, and his wishes were irrelevant. Tearful, Tsurugi ran away, swearing to grow stronger and prove that he didn't need the ring. Inwardly, he apologized to Yuka for having to keep it from her.
Back to the present, before Yuka can question Tsurugi about his words, the curse user suddenly awakens and activates his barrier technique in the children's room, attempting to transfer them away. Before he can succeed, Maru reveals his third eye. With a single glance, he instantly knocks the man unconscious. Shocked, Yuka and Tsurugi stare in disbelief, demanding to know if Maru is an alien as he hurriedly covers the eye.
