Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie ( (げき) (じょう) (ばん) 呪術廻戦 (じゅじゅつかいせん) 0 (ゼロ) Gekijō-ban Jujutsu Kaisen 0?) is a Japanese anime movie adaptation of Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Jujutsu High. It was animated by Studio MAPPA and premiered on December 24, 2021 in Japan.

Plot

Main Article: Cursed Child Arc

Yuta Okkotsu is haunted by the spirit of his childhood friend Rika, who died in a traffic accident. Her spirit no longer appears as the sweet girl he called his beloved. Instead, her spirit has been cursed and she manifests as a monstrous entity who protects him against his will.

Unable to control Rika's immense power, Yuta is helpless to stop the bloodshed caused by his curse. As a result, Yuta is apprehended by jujutsu sorcerers, secret guardians of the world who are trained to combat cursed spirits like Rika. Yuta wishes to die in complete isolation so no one else can get hurt, but Satoru Gojo offers him a different path.

Gojo has Yuta join Jujutsu High, where he studies with other sorcerers in training in order to control Rika in hopes of helping other people. Now a first-year, Yuta learns jujutsu and combat arts alongside his new peers: Maki Zenin, a cursed tools user, Toge Inumaki, a cursed speech user, and Panda, a talking panda bear.

Thanks to connections made with friends and finding his place at Jujutsu High, Yuta begins to gain the confidence to feel alive. He even begins to become comfortable with his abilities. However, as the training progresses Yuta learns that the dangers of the jujutsu world go far beyond that of evil spirits.

Production

The project was revealed on March 27, 2021 after the anime's first season had concluded. It was announced that it would adapt Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Jujutsu High.

Like the television series, the film is produced by MAPPA and directed by Sunghoo Park. Park previewed the movie's plot in interviews and revealed the movie includes new content not featured in Volume 0.[1] Park originally wanted to cover the prequel series in the first few episodes of the anime, but ultimately decided to begin with the main series. He and the staff later felt the prequel would fit the format of the movie more than the television series.

Scriptwriter Hiroshi Seko confirmed additional original scenes needed to be created to help the plot fit the two-hour theatrical time slot. New material was added to flush out the relationship between Yuta and Rika, as well as Gojo and Geto. Park and Seko both agree that the action scenes are still the focus and wanted to make them even cooler than the anime.[2] While not too different from the television series, Park aimed to make this film have its own cinematic style.

Promotion

On June 13, 2021 an official key visual featuring Yuta and Rika was released.

On July 30, 2021 the first proper trailer was released. It featured original animation and a track composed by Yoshimasa Terui.[3] With the release of the trailer, it was announced that Megumi Orata would be the voice of Yuta Okkotsu.

On November 4, 2021 the second trailer was released, featuring footage from the movie. Along with the trailer, it was announced that the band King Gnu would perform the film's theme song, Ichizu.

Following the official release of the film, a fourth key visual and a fourth promotional video were released to promote it. On January 5, 2022, it was announced that the film will release in North American theaters on March 18, 2022.

Reception

Upon release, the movie has exceeded 2.6 billion yen in box office revenue, with 1.9 million admissions over a 3 days period in Japanese theatres.[4] This gives Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie the title of second-biggest three-day opening weekend in Japanese box office history, only behind 2020's Demon Slayer – The Movie: Mugen Train.
