Summon (降霊 Kōrei?) is the thirty-fifth episode of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime adaptation and the eleventh episode of the second season.

Summary

It's up to Yuji, Megumi, and Ino to take down the curtain keeping jujutsu sorcerers out of inner Shibuya. This ultimately leads them to a clash with curse users in a battle over the barrier.

Plot Details

Yuji and Ino riding on Nue (Anime)

Yuji and Ino attack the curse users protecting the curtain.

Four curtains overlap each other across Shibuya. One of them prevents sorcerers from moving freely across the city. Yuji tries to break it with a punch at full force, but the barrier wall doesn't budge. Ino is impressed by Yuji's strength, comparing him to Nanami's level of striking power. Megumi suggests they have to find a weak point and create a hole in the curtain even if it's only for a moment. While kicking a transfigured human, Yuji asks why this is necessary. Ino explains that the fundamentals of barriers are to surround oneself with a wall to protect them. He believes the user must be inside the curtain, but Yuji reveals what happened at Meiji-Jingumae Station. Ino understands his logic, as due to a binding vow, staying outside the barrier increases the risk of being caught in exchange for reinforcing it. Following this line of thinking, such an incredibly sturdy barrier has to be established somewhere that stands out. Yuji, Megumi, and Ino all come to the same conclusion as they look up at Shibuya Central Tower.

Yuji drops Awasaka off Shibuya Tower (Anime)

Yuji drops one of the curse users off Shibuya Tower.

Three curse users stand atop the tower and discuss whether or not the jujutsu sorcerers figure out their scheme. They agree the top of the tower is the most obvious spot in the city and that even if they're discovered, the transfigured humans on the lower floors will serve as a roadblock. However, Yuji and Ino use Nue to scale the tower and surprise attack the curse users. Using a wire he got from Maki, Yuji and Nue snag all three curse users on the line at once. While Yuji gets the curse users away from the source of the curtain, Ino dashes for it. The elderly male curse user, Jiro Awasaka, realizes they must know about commissioned curtains. Stakes wrapped in talismans serve as the base for the curtain. A barrier technique is already infused in the talisman and it only requires a sorcerer to activate it with cursed energy and the incantation. Ino heads to where one of these talismans is and destroys it but he quickly notices that two are missing. Awasaka has both in hand and Yuji decides to take him out by further ensnaring him in the wire before dropping him off the skyscraper.

Kaichi following Ogami (Anime)

Ino fighting Ogami and her grandson.

The elderly female curse user, Ogami tells her "grandson" to prepare. Ino readies himself as well, lowering his mask over his face and stating that it's time for him to carve a path to becoming grade 1. Yuji exits the tower and regroups with Megumi on the street level. Megumi already has eyes on Awasaka's body but something isn't right. Regardless of cursed energy reinforcement, Awasaka's body is too clean from the impact. Megumi demands he get up and he eventually does, cursing the youth for not having any pity on the elderly. As they both activate their jujutsu, Megumi tells Yuji they can't waste any time on him, and Yuji assures him they won't.

Ino is insistent that Nanami be the one who recommends him for grade 1 because he looks up to him. When doing dirty work like sorcery, Ino wants to try and do things the right way. Whenever he thinks of how things should be done, he thinks of Nanami. Faced with two curse users, Ino summons auspicious beast no. 1: Kaichi. This conjures a drill-like projectile that carves away a large section of the grandson's defending arm. Ogami finds it ironic that their opponent is also using a seance technique. Ino summons Reiki next, generating a black liquid he commands at will. He uses it to slide around and strike the grandson with increased mobility.

Toad throwing Awasaka (Anime)

Yuji and Megumi attack a seemingly invincible Awasaka.

Meanwhile, Yuji and Megumi fight together against Awasaka. Megumi finds it more difficult to work together with Yuji than fighting the enemy itself. Yuji lands hard punches and Divine Dog's claws slash the curse user across the face. Yet Awasaka comes right back and slashes Yuji with a knife. Yuji repels him with another strike and then Megumi's Toad slams Awasaka into an overpass. Despite all this, Awasaka remains undamaged, confusing the boys. Megumi asks Yuji about saying they wouldn't waste time, but he has no rebuttal.

Ogami prays with her beads and Ino tries to interrupt it only for the grandson to protect her with his body. Ino wins every exchange with the curse user, but he notices something is up. Ogami completes her preparations, and the grandson consumes a capsule containing DNA. The necromancer seances the soul of none other than Toji Fushiguro into the grandson, granting him his physical abilities. The grandson catches Ino's Kaichi as the sorcerer tries to stop them and his face begins to shift into Toji's. Ogami asks him how the transformation is going, and with Toji's voice, the grandson claims it's the best one ever.

Awasaka kicking Yuji (Anime)

"I'm always in the prime of my life!!"

On December 7th, 1989, Satoru Gojo was born. Back then, jujutsu sorcerers were too busy with cursed spirits to go after villainous curse users. Sorcerers like Ogami and Awasaka could kill and make money as hitmen all they wanted. This was the status quo until Satoru Gojo changed everything. A hit was put out on him at a young age, but Awasaka and Ogami understood exactly how dangerous he was from one glance from the Six Eyes. Awasaka and the other curse users cooperating with Pseudo-Geto are doing so because they had their freedom stolen from them by Gojo's mere presence in the world. Awasaka rejects retirement and continues to fight because he'll always trample over the weak until the day he dies.

Toji relentlessly beating Ino (Anime)

Ino's brutal defeat at "Toji's" hands.

Megumi lands another solid blow and Yuji questions how he can still be unharmed. Megumi knows it must be the curse user's innate technique and assumes it can't be something as overpowered as damage nullification. He bluffs in order to confirm that Awasaka can't defeat Gojo and decides to test out a hypothesis. Megumi activates Rabbit Escape, summoning a large swarm of hares that blocks off their opponent. Megumi grabs Yuji and tells him to retreat for now because he's figured out their opponent's technique.

Ino realizes that his opponent has been transformed through a seance because Granny Ogami is a medium, just like him. He quickly switches his focus because he knows that's not his main problem, he can tell from a single glance that Toji is extremely powerful. Ino attempts to summon no. 4: Ryu, but Toji takes his mask off in a flash. Before Ino can even fully turn around, Toji lands a devastating punch to the chin and then pummels Ino with rapid-fire punches.

Yuji defeats Awasaka (Anime)

Yuji overcomes Awasaka's technique and defeats him.

Awasaka assumes his opponents will launch a surprise attack from behind the cover of the rabbits. However, Megumi dispels them and then drops down with Max Elephant from above. Awasaka resists its weight and Megumi quickly dispels it as well. The curse user tells Megumi to be more direct, but the student says that's more his partner's style. Yuji hurls an entire car at the curse user and they both prepare for a follow-up attack. Awasaka expects a desperate full-power swing from his opponents and is confident he can strike them down with a counterattack. His innate technique is Inverse, making attacks weaker the stronger they are and vice versa. Unknown to the curse user, Megumi has already figured this out. The duo baits Awasaka into activating his technique and then Toad strikes with a weak attack from its tongue.

Yuji and Megumi attack with a mix of strong and weak blows while Awasaka is staggered, barraging him with several effective strikes. Awasaka realizes they've got him figured out, but he eventually forces them back and tells them not to get cocky. Yuji charges up a max-power swing and the two fights are poised to clash. However, Yuji stops his own momentum just before impact and adjusts it into a weaker punch, knocking Awasaka unconscious with his own technique. Megumi commends Yuji for pulling off refined attacks so well and the latter is surprised he thinks so.
