Plot Details

Satoru Gojo confronts the curses in Shibuya (Anime)

Jogo, Hanami, and Choso challenge the strongest sorcerer.

Satoru Gojo arrives on BF3 of the Hikarie Building where hundreds of civilians are trapped inside by the curtain. There's also another barrier below that also traps non-sorcerers. Gojo walks on the air above the crowd until he reaches an atrium opening to the floor below. He gets an idea of the enemy's plan before long and welcomes the challenge. He descends to B5F on the Fukutoshin Line Platform where Hanami, Jogo, and Choso are waiting for him. Gojo tells Jogo not to come up with any excuses for when he loses again but the cursed spirit remains confident. Jogo replies that Gojo needs to get his first-ever excuse ready.

Yuji realizes Mahito is involved in the Shibuya Incident (Anime)

Yuji learns his mortal enemy is in Shibuya.

Meanwhile, Yuji is assigned to Team Mei Mei with the grade 1 sorcerer and her younger brother, Ui Ui. Yuji wants to help Gojo instead of remaining on standby and Mei Mei tells him he'll get the chance. She receives a call that takes the team off standby, and they're assigned to deal with a curtain that appeared over Meiji-Jingumae Station. Mei Mei tells Yuuji to keep up and they run to the subway station where an assistant manager breaks down the situation. There are two curtains and Team Mei Mei must disable the first one before they can reach the B5F of the station. There is also a swarm of transfigured humans attacking civilians inside, forcing Yuji to realize that Mahito must be involved. Mei Mei first scouts the station by sharing her perception with the crows she sent to fly around the inside. Before sharing any information with Yuji, Mei Mei asks if he wants to fight one strong curse or a bunch of weak transfigured humans. She assumes the latter and tells him to take out the target between BF1 and BF2. While he's doing so, Mei Mei states that she'll deal with the transfigured humans.

Mei Mei tells him to be careful, but Yuji swears he won't lose ever again as he enters the station. He eventually happens upon a Grasshopper cursed spirit eating someone's head. Claiming to be smart, the observant cursed spirit recognizes Yuji is a sorcerer. Yuji asks if the patchface curse is in the station and the grasshopper reveals his name is Mahito. Recalling his sensei teaching him about how complex barriers can be, Yuji figures such a simpleton cursed spirit couldn't have generated a curtain with conditions. He notices the grasshopper curse standing in front of a peculiar-looking nail in the ground that's wrapped in talismans. The curse mentions "protecting the curtain" and Yuji realizes the talisman must be what's projecting the barrier.

Grasshopper Curse eating a man (Anime)

Yuji runs into a grasshopper cursed spirit.

The grasshopper begins to talk about how it doesn't like the taste of transfigured humans until Yuji attacks. Yuji kicks it through a wall and demands all cursed spirits stop looking down on humans. The curse quickly gets back to its feet and asks Yuji if he knows what kind of being it is. Yuji states the obvious and the grasshopper is surprised to learn his enemy is smart too. The grasshopper curse was born from humanity's ill will against the locust plague. It has the physical capabilities of a human-sized grasshopper, but Yuji is able to keep up with its speed and power. It's incredibly strong jaw and legs tear apart the area, but it doesn't deal any damage to its opponent. The grasshopper continues to state that it's smart until Yuji reveals that clever people usually don't need to state so. Shocked, the grasshopper covers his mouth and Yuji steps upright in its face with a deeply angered expression. They engage in an taijutsu, exchanging rapid-fire blows. While the grasshopper has four arms, Yuji effortlessly overwhelms the curse with his superior strength and speed. Ordinarily, this curse would be superior to a human in every way, but it's highly inferior to Yuji.

Yuji overpowering the Grasshopper Curse (Anime)

Yuji displaying his superior physical prowess.

Yuji doesn't believe his "clever" enemy will use any tricks, but the grasshopper spits at him and forces him to duck. Then it expands its abdomen to stab him in the face, only for Yuji to deflect the protrusion and remove it from the body in one motion. The curse ended up using a trick, but no amount of clever tactics can close the massive gap in skill between the two. Yuji exorcises the curse and breaks the talisman to lower the curtain shortly after. Mei Mei notices the curtain is gone and tells Ui Ui they'll meet up with Yuji before heading down to B5F. On that very floor, Mahito notices "Ko-Guy" has been exorcised and states a decently strong sorcerer must be around. He wants to fight them and regrets being unable to, but Mahito knows he has an assignment to complete that's more important. Team Mei Mei regroups, and the grade 1 sorcerer commends Yuji for his performance. He reveals it wasn't Mahito he was fighting but Ui Ui demands he just accept the compliment. They reach B5F but it's completely devoid of people except for one person.

Satoru Gojo intimidates Jogo (Anime)

"I'm surprised you thought you could win with this sorry excuse for a plan."

Back at the Fukutoshin line, Hanami blocks the atrium above the tracks with wooden roots. Assuming he's trying to block off any exits, Gojo states he wouldn't run regardless. He says the curses would kill everyone if he did leave but Jogo confidently replies they would do so anyway. Many of the civilians standing on the platforms above the tracks are forced onto the train line. Geto developed a plan for the strongest sorcerer that includes using inferior non-sorcerers to stifle his movements. While Gojo is unable to use his full strength, Geto told Mahito's group to stall him for twenty minutes. Jogo, Hanami, and Choso begin attacking the crowd, causing widespread panic and confusion. When they see an opening, Jogo and Hanami both attack Gojo at once and their fists are stopped by the Infinity. Anticipating this, the duo simultaneously activates domain amplification. By enveloping their bodies in a small-scale domain, Jogo and Hanami can neutralize any technique they come into contact with, even the Limitless.

Gojo retreats to the top of the platform away from the curses and Jogo taunts him for running away. Gojo admits he's surprised but Jogo tells him not to make excuses. Gojo quickly clarifies that he's only surprised the curses thought they could win if this is all they've got.

Anime & Manga Differences

  • In the anime, when Yuji attacks Ko-Guy, he punches the grasshopper curse through a wall, who subsequently climbs back up. In the manga, the punch crushes the curse against a wall and causes it to crumble, though he is not punched through it.
  • In the anime, there is an extended fight scene between Yuji and Ko-Guy where the two combatants crash through several walls before the curse asks Yuji whether he is clever or not. In the manga, the fight before Ko-Guy asks the question is brief and mostly consists of Yuji dodging his attacks.
  • In the anime, during Jogo's flashback, the unregistered special grade cursed spirits are seen playing in a playground with humans while Pseudo-Geto blows bubbles. In the manga, they were playing in an empty field.
  • In the anime, Choso's Slicing Exorcism does not damage any non-sorcerers and only attacks Satoru. In the manga, the attack slices through and kills several humans before being stopped by Satoru's Infinity.
  • In the anime, while taunting Satoru for evading their attacks, Jogo pierces his hand through a nearby man before setting him ablaze. In the manga, he grabs and tears off the head of a nearby man and burns it.
