Yuji tries to reach what's left of Junpei's heart with both his fists and his words. He promises to bring him back to jujutsu high to make everything right, but just then... Mahito descends to impose his will.
Yuji calls Nanami and tells him, he's going to Satozakura High School. Standing with Takuma Ino as they're surrounded by transfigured humans in the sewers of the city, Nanami replies that he can't because the patch face curse is likely alive and at the school if there is a curtain cast there. He tells Yuji to remain on standby and asks Ino to deal with all the transfigured humans. Ino isn't kind to the idea at first but Nanami says he'll put in a recommendation for his grade 1 promotion, exciting the grade 2 sorcerer.
Yuji decides to move out regardless, but Ijichi tries to stop him. He doesn't want Yuji to get hurt like their first mission but the brash student makes off to the school anyway. Yuji arrives to witness Junpei attacking Shota Ito, one of the students who had bullied him in the past. Both sorcerers clash and Yuji struggles to deal with Junpei's jellyfish shikigami Moon Dregs. It's soft body absorbs the impact of each of his punches and protects Junpei while he hides inside it.
Junpei tells the jujutsu sorcerer to stay out of it claims there's no reality in indiscriminate salvation. He doesn't believe people have a heart and all the rules of morality are a delusion. Moon Dregs uses its tentacles to bind Yuji while Junpei claims no one person has the right to stop someone else from taking a life. Junpei learned jujutsu from Mahito, who taught him how to summon a shikigami with a poison cursed technique that he can control using his cursed energy.
Yuji reaches out of the mass of jellyfish and grabs Junpei from behind. He flees but Yuji punches the shikigami into Junpei, pushing them both out the window. Outside, as Junpei recovers, he thinks of his mother and tells Yuji to stop interfering. Yuji jumps down and the jellyfish tries to use its stingers to pierce him but he counters. His sensei Gojo told Yuji to go after the user whenever he faces someone utilizing a shikigami. He punches Junpei back inside and says everything he says is just an excuse, and not one worth throwing his life away for. Yuji says he could never say these things to his mother but Junpei insists people don't have hearts. If people did have hearts, that means someone with one cursed him and his mother.
Unable to tell right from wrong anymore, Junpei uses his shikigami to lash out. Yuji allows its stingers to pierce his body, surprising Junpei. Moon Dregs is dispelled and Yuji uses words to get through to his friend. He promises to take him back to jujutsu high, helping him calm down and promising to find the person who killed his mother. Just as Yuji's pleas begin to reach Junpei, Mahito descends the school stairs towards them and interrupts.
Unable to recognize Mahito, Yuji hesitates. This allows the curse to pin him to the wall, forcing Yuji to realize this is the exact person Nanami warned him about. He pleads with Junpei to run regardless of how he knows this curse. Junpei initially insists Mahito isn't a bad person, but realizes he was wrong all along. Mahito places his hand on Junpei's shoulder while immobilizing Yuji. He whispers into Junpei's ear that he is as foolish as those he looks down upon and that's why he'll die.
Mahito uses Idle Transfiguration to mutate Junpei and force him to fight Yuji. Desperate, the vessel begs Sukuna for help only healing Junpei to be denied. Mahito is surprised, thinking that Sukuna would want to find his way into a favorable binding vow. He's unaware Sukuna has already done so, and Yuji has lost the memory of the event as well. Mahito desires what comes next regardless, so he and Sukuna share a loud sinister laugh at Yuji's expense. This forces Yuji to realize once again that these people are curses.
In his final moments, Junpei asks "why" as his transfigured body gives way and dies. Yuji's dreams of having him in their class fade as Mahito laughs at the fact Junpei died from being mutated so aggressively. More enraged than he's ever been, Yuji delivers a powerful right hook that smashes Mahito's face. The curse quickly recovers and begins to explain how physical attacks won't work, but his nose suddenly begins to bleed. Mahito realizes that two souls exist within Yuji's body, so he can natural perceive the contours of the soul.
As a mix of pain and wrath fill the air with Yuji's negative energy, he thinks to himself how his next words made it seem as if every other thing he said had no merit whatsoever. Yuji says he's going to kill Mahito, to which the curse replies that he's supposed to say exorcise. Yuji attacks and Mahito avoids by changing the shape of his body to be more mobile. His goal is to draw Yuji into a battle he can't win, and corner him into relying on Sukuna, which will lead to them creating a binding vow. This is in hopes to get on Sukuna's good side, but it presumes that Mahito is stronger than Yuji.
As they stand off following the initial exchange, both of them come to the conclusion on how to kill the other. Yuji prepares to pound Mahito into nothing while the latter changes his arms into blades, a shape more fit for murder. The curse slashes through the building until Yuji evades outside and then fires a drill arm at him. Yuji catches the flesh connecting Mahito to the drill but it abruptly grows spikes. The sorcerer doesn't let go despite the spikes piercing his hands and throws Mahito to the ground while he still has a hand on him.
They exchange blows again at close range and Mahito pierces Yuji's body , stunning him. He attempts to touch Yuji's soul in an attempt to force him to switch. However, Sukuna takes this as an insult and tells Mahito to know his place. He only forgives it this time because they enjoyed a laugh together, but there won't be a second time. Back in reality, Yuji says he won't switch but he will kill Mahito. He smashes Mahito's face repeatedly with headbutts and appears to have the upper hand.
Just as Yuji prepares to finish it, Mahito suddenly appears behind Yuji and nearly takes his head off. Fortunately, Nanami arrives in time to deflect Mahito's attack. He says he'll lecture Yuji another time and asks for a status update. Yuji reveals he couldn't save two people but Nanami is more worried about him. Nanami notices Mahito bleeding from his nose and asks how that happened. He reveals to Yuji that his cursed technique doesn't work on Mahito, but Yuji's attacks do. He also deduces that for whatever reason, Mahito can't touch Yuji's soul. Together, they can create openings for each other to fight and defeat the curse. Ready for round two, the Grade 1 Sorcerer states they must exorcise the curse here and now.
