Cyrus Veil (サイラス・ヴェイル Sairasu Bueiru?) is a character in the Jujutsu Kaisen series. He is the Under Secretary for the United States Office of Energy and Environment. As a consultant to the President, it was Cyrus who convinced the government to coordinate with Kenjaku's plan to abduct jujutsu sorcerers for energy research.
Appearance
Cyrus is an older man with light-colored eyes and hair, thick eyebrows and no facial hair. He has noticeable wrinkles on his face that come naturally with age and wears a suit befitting a government official.
Personality
Cyrus is a career-oriented man who takes his role at the office of energy very seriously. He has a nationalist mentality and hopes to put the United States ahead of other countries in regards to tackling the energy crisis. Cyrus fears above all else that the United States will fall behind the global race to energy independence and is willing to cooperate with Kenjaku to prevent that.
Cyrus views Kenjaku's plan as an opportunity to study cursed energy and turn it into the perfect clean energy resource. He's willing to do this at any means neccessary even if it means abducting foreign citizens by force and experimenting on them.[1] When the President himself questioned the morality of Cyrus' backing of Kenjaku, the secretary spun it as an opportunity to "protect" rather than adbuct. It's possible that Cyrus actually believes this, as he was adamant that the United States move quickly to protect Japanese citizens before other nations and try to obtain cursed energy for themselves.[2]
Synopsis
In September 2018, Cyrus was present amongst the high-ranking U.S. officials during their meeting with Kenjaku. After Kenjaku explained the concept of cursed energy and the phenomena caused by it, he demonstrated his cursed technique to the Americans after having them wear cursed tool glasses that allowed them to see curses. Unlike his shocked colleagues who believed the cursed spirits were images created with virtual reality technology, Cyrus confirmed their existence and saw opportunity in the curses. Upon finishing their viewing of the Shibuya Incident recorded by Kokichi Muta, Cyrus suggested that cursed energy could be the solution to the energy crisis, as its cleanliness would allow it to replace all known energy resources.[3]
After Kenjaku informed the bureaucrats about the upcoming Culling Game, Cyrus urged the President to capitalize on the opportunity and abduct jujutsu sorcerers as research samples, reasoning that other nations will target normal Japanese if they also learned of the existence of curses, and the United States must act quickly to protect them.[4] Later, when Lieutenant General Garry K. Johnson asked if five dozen sorcerers would suffice as experiment samples, Cyrus happily agreed on the number.[5]
