Nobara rejects Momo's notions about excusing Mai for her behavior solely based on her family's actions. Just as the Tokyo first-year turns the tides in her favor, Mai steps in to eliminate her. Shortly after, Maki arrives to avenge her protégé.
Despite getting knocked back several times by gusts of wind from Momo's broom, Nobara continues to get up. Momo notices that she's gotten used to fighting and Nobara knows this is because of her training with Panda. Momo sums up her struggles to be nervous about Toge appearing, making him a threat no matter where he is.
Momo goes on to tell Nobara that perfection wasn't enough for the Zenin family when it came to Mai. Nobara attempts to hit her opponent with nails but misses, forced to listen to Momo's lecture as she dodges. Within the jujutsu community, it is said that you're not a sorcerer then you're not worthy to live. Maki and Mai had to endure that sexist attitude their entire life. Momo believes someone who looks at a curse like Yuji as an ally could never understand.
This upsets Nobara, who claims that people don't get to be terrible people just because they're misfortunate. In the same vein, just because someone is fortunate doesn't mean they deserve to be ridiculed. Regardless of Mai's upbringing, Nobara doesn't like her but she does like Maki. Momo has never even stopped to consider the person that Yuji is. Nobara states that life isn't simply a job and activates Straw Doll Technique: Hairpin!
The technique causes Nobara's nails to explode with cursed energy, breaking the trees they got lodged in. This is why Nobara continued to fire nails at Momo despite missing. Momo is able to avoid the debris from the tree, but this gives Nobara a chance to reach her opponent. The third-year kicks Nobara away before she reaches her, but Nobara grabs one of the bristles from Momo's broom. Nobara has had enough with Momo's boys vs. girls nonsense and emphatically activates Straw Doll Technique: Resonance!
Resonance causes Momo to lose control of her broom, forcing her into Nobara's range. Using a squeaky hammer pummels Momo's face but just before Nobara secures a victory, she's shot in the temple by a rubber bullet from Mai. Mai immediately calls Momo to confirm that Mechamaru is likely out of the competition. She asks Momo to return to the skies and is immediately confronted by Maki, who left Kasumi behind.
Maki claims Mai should've asked Momo for backup but Mai wants to fight one-on-one. The Tokyo Zenin sister politely asks that her younger sister call her "big sis".
