Inhuman Makyo Shinjuku Showdown, Part 20 (人外 (じんがい) () (きょう) (しん) 宿 (じゅく) 決戦 (けっせん) Jingai Makyō Shinjuku Kessen 20?) is the two hundred and forty-eighth chapter of Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen.

Summary

All hope seems lost when the Executioner's Sword plan fails as Higuruma's life expires. Yuji's indomitable spirit leads Sukuna to accept Kenjaku's failsafe and find the motivation to strip away that very spirit. Before the situation delves into chaos any further, Yuta returns to the battlefield to finally confront Sukuna himself!

Plot Details

At the last second, Sukuna dodges out of the way of Yuji's stab. As Higuruma falls, Yuji watches the Executioner's Sword begin to lose its light and disintegrate. Not giving the boy any time to mourn, Sukuna delivers a few strong punches to Yuji and kicks him away, before following up with two Dismantle slashes that push him further back.

Ui Ui and Kirara retrieve Higuruma

Ui Ui and Kirara take Higuruma away.

Staring at his regrown hand, Sukuna laments that although Higuruma died, the confiscated Kamutoke is not returned. He also notes that Yuji's stomach, having been shredded into bits earlier by him using Cleave, has fully healed. Sukuna then notices Kirara Hoshi and Ui Ui nearby, with the former carrying Higuruma's corpse and the latter holding a large sheet. In the next instant, the two teleport away and disappear from the battlefield, taking away Higuruma's body. Unsurprised, Sukuna surmises that Ui Ui's teleportation cursed technique was used to retrieve Satoru Gojo's corpse earlier, and wonders if they are transporting the bodies to Shoko Ieiri. Sukuna finds this unlikely, as reverse cursed technique is less than half as effective if used on another person, and Shoko's is not as powerful as his or Satoru's anyways.

Yuji heals himself with reverse cursed technique

"The boy has acquired reverse cursed technique himself."

Sukuna then notices Yuji healing his injuries with reverse cursed technique, having learned how to perform it in the past month. While the King of Curses should feel excited about killing Yuji and Yuta Okkotsu, he is confused as to why he feels irritated instead. Spacing out, Sukuna wonders if he is feeling disappointed by Higuruma's death, but quickly denies the notion and reaffirms his hedonistic ideology of not needing others to satisfy himself. The only purpose other people serve for Sukuna is to amuse him until he dies, as he holds no ideals and strives for nothing more than what befits his nature.

However, Sukuna ponders why he now feels displeased when he sees others dedicated to an ideal, especially one which involves killing him, as people holding similar goals existed a thousand years ago. He then realizes that he has changed, and the root cause of that change is Yuji. Unlike the strangers he killed a thousand years ago whose exaggerated reasons and ideals were only conveyed to him through their dying words that he did not understand, Sukuna is deeply aware of Yuji's unbreakable spirit, having inhabited the same body as him. The idea that someone weaker than him can rival him with nothing more than the willpower to achieve their ideals is what truly irritates Sukuna, as his capabilities freed him from pursuing goals and even made him loathe them.

Sukuna accepts Kenjaku's failsafe

Sukuna is given the authority to begin the merger.

With this realization, Sukuna chuckles and declares his intention of destroying the jujutsu sorcerers and crushing their ideals once and for all. Just then, a bright orb of light appears above his head. As a confused Kusakabe and Takuma Ino arrive on the scene, Yuji's Kogane announces Rule 15 of the Culling Game: Megumi Fushiguro has the authority to activate the Great Merger between Tengen and humanity. Since he incarnated through Megumi's body, Sukuna possesses the authority by proxy. Kusakabe realizes that this was Kenjaku's backup plan in case he died, indicating that Yuta's surprise attack succeeded.

As Sukuna swallows the glowing orb, Kusakabe laments that his initial assumption of Sukuna being better to leave alive than Kenjaku due to being less likely to slaughter humankind is now proven wrong, as Sukuna announces his plans to kill all the sorcerers present, then the rest of the Culling Game players, and finally the monster created from merging Tengen with mankind.

Yuta and Rika attack Sukuna

The King of Curses vs. The Queen of Curses.

Suddenly, the ground beneath Sukuna collapses as Yuta appears on the scene, apologizing for his belated arrival. Sukuna leaps at Yuta and channels cursed energy into his hand, but the special grade sorcerer quickly intercepts it with his katana. He tells Yuta to put in more effort, otherwise he will kill everyone he cares about. Rika abruptly appears and slams Sukuna into a nearby building with her hand, angrily telling him to mind his words. Recognizing the Queen of Curses, the King of Curses smiles as he holds up Rika's hand.

Simple domain isn’t neutralizing the curse itself, so “thinning it out” might have been the wrong word choice.
